At Vital Reset, we hear the same questions from many people who are curious about psilocybin. Oregon’s program is brand new, just 2 years old, and ther can be a lot of confusion. This post covers the most common questions so you can feel informed, confident, and safe as you explore your options.
1. Is psilocybin legal in Oregon?
Yes. In 2020, Oregon voters passed Measure 109, which created a regulated program for adults 21 and over to access psilocybin at licensed service centers with licensed facilitators.
2. Can I grow my own mushrooms or take them home?
No. All psilocybin must be purchased from licensed manufacturers and consumed onsite at a licensed service center. You cannot legally grow, sell, or possess psilocybin outside this framework.
3. Do I need a prescription or referral from a doctor?
No. Oregon’s psilocybin services are not medical. Anyone over 21 may participate, regardless of diagnosis. You don’t need a doctor’s note, referral, or proof of condition.
4. Is psilocybin safe?
Psilocybin has been shown in research and decades of traditional use to be generally safe. However, it is not appropriate for everyone. At Vital Reset, facilitators review your health history to ensure safety before beginning. If your health history or medications are complex, we ask that you have a medical evaluation with an appropriate expert.
5. Who should not take psilocybin?
Psilocybin is not recommended for people with:
-
Certain heart conditions
-
A personal or family history of psychosis
-
Current use of medications such as lithium
Screening during preparation will help determine if psilocybin is a safe option for you.
6. What does a facilitator do?
Facilitators are licensed professionals trained to “hold space.” They don’t control your journey—they support you with presence, compassion, and safety throughout your experience.
7. How much psilocybin do people usually take?
Doses vary. Some choose mini-doses or microdoses, while others choose moderate to high doses for deep inner work. Facilitators will guide you in choosing what feels right.
8. What’s the difference between microdosing and a journey?
-
Microdosing: Very small amounts, usually below the level of noticeable effects.
-
Journey: A larger, intentional dose taken in a safe, supportive environment, often leading to significant emotional and psychological shifts.
9. How long does a psilocybin session last?
Most journeys last 4–6 hours, with time afterward for rest and reflection. You’ll be with your facilitator the entire time.
10. What happens if I have a difficult experience?
Challenging moments can arise, but they are often where the deepest healing happens. Facilitators are trained to help you stay grounded and safe until the intensity passes.
11. What does integration mean?
Integration is the process of reflecting on your journey and applying the insights to daily life. At Vital Reset, we offer integration sessions and group circles to help support long-term change.
12. How much does it cost?
Costs vary by center, facilitator, and length of session. At Vital Reset, we are transparent about pricing and offer a free phone consultation so you know exactly what to expect. Insurance does not currently cover psilocybin.
13. Can I do psilocybin with friends or family?
Yes. Oregon allows group sessions, and many people choose to journey with loved ones or partners. Everyone in the group has to give written consent to journey together. At Vital Reset, we also offer private, individual sessions if that feels more comfortable.
14. What if I want to come back for another session?
Some clients do one journey. Others return for multiple sessions over time. There is no required number; it depends on your goals and what feels right for you. Some depression studies have used two journeys a week apart, or months apart.
15. Will psilocybin cure me?
Psilocybin is not an instant cure. It is a catalyst that can open doors to healing, insight, and change. The real transformation comes from how you integrate those insights into your life afterward.
