At Vital Reset, we’re proud to work with facilitators who bring not only deep training but also decades of real-world experience. Michael Hauty, MD, is one of those rare individuals whose path bridges clinical medicine, harm reduction, and the healing potential of psychedelics.
Dr. Hauty completed his facilitator training with SubtleWinds Cohort #1 and now serves as the lead instructor for their Neuroscience & Pharmacology modules. His relationship with the psychedelic movement began in the late 1960s and has continued to shape his life and work ever since.
He earned his MD in 1983 and spent over two decades in general and trauma surgery, followed by six years as an emergency physician. This extensive clinical background informs his current work as a psilocybin facilitator, especially his ability to connect with people navigating life’s most difficult moments.
Michael’s approach is deeply human. He sees the facilitator’s role not as one of directing the experience, but of creating a safe, supportive container for the client’s inner work. “The client and the medicine do the necessary work,” he says. “My role is to hold the space with integrity.”
He identifies as a generalist facilitator, welcoming clients from all walks of life. However, he has a special interest in supporting people facing end-of-life anxiety and existential distress.
His background also makes him uniquely suited to work with fellow medical professionals—those experiencing burnout, workplace trauma, or exploring psychedelic care themselves.
He is also deeply involved in harm reduction, especially at large gatherings like the Oregon Country Fair. Michael has spent decades volunteering in the on-site psychedelic support tent, where he sits with individuals in the midst of overwhelming or challenging psychedelic experiences. His grounded presence, medical knowledge, and open-hearted care have earned him the admiration of fellow volunteers and countless guests. Simply put, people love him. His calm and compassionate demeanor helps others feel safe—even when they’re struggling deeply.
His experiences at events like these have made him acutely aware of the risks of unregulated psychedelic use, and have deepened his commitment to Oregon’s legal, supported model under Measure 109.
Michael emphasizes the power of music, color, breath, and movement to deepen the journey, and stresses the importance of thorough preparation beforehand and thoughtful, nonjudgmental integration afterward.
